Nammu the primeval goddess.
The one who created birth.
An and Ki; her firstborn.
Known as heaven and earth.
These two joined and made Enlil.
Who split them both in twain.
Choosing to stay with his mother
He claimed her as his domain.
Nammu and An begat Enki.
Who created all of us.
The people, the trees and the flowers.
And the rest of the noise and the fuss.
Heaven’s reserved for the holy.
Only deities here may tread.
The opposite place is Irkalla
This is the place to dread.
Its other name is the underworld
A goddess of dreadful fame.
Her consort’s the lord of death.
Nergal is his name.
