Jake stood in the ten items or less queue surreptitiously juggling eleven items in his hands. He looked around him at the surrounding customers and staff. Would they know if he had eleven items? Would they care? They could tell him to put one back, what would he choose? What would happen if he took the eleven items through, would an alarm scream? Jake stood ready to pay quickly as the checkout assistant scanned the eleventh item. Sirens screeched as a warning sounded; a security guard appeared at Jake’s left elbow, grasping firmly before taking him away to be arrested.
